AI technology and its effects on jobs and
role in the Art world.

Let's start by explaining what AI or artificial intelligence is. Artificial intelligence is the capability of a digital computer or a robot operated by a computer to carry out tasks frequently associated with intelligent beings.
With the rise of AI technologies, artists are becoming more and more affected, positively and negatively, challenging traditional artists and media.

Nerdwallet, com explains how ‘Roughly two-thirds of current jobs are likely to be affected by some degree of AI automation.’ People who are studying AI software are already replacing employees through automation and special effect categories, eliminating career prospects, thus causing more and more unemployment. Although, there is the possibility that AI job opportunities could open up as the technologies progress. So the question is: What will this look like in the future? Well, in an article posted on BBC News, Goldman Sachs explores the possibility that AI users could have the ability to replace more than 300 million full-time jobs. This fact itself is terrifying to think about. What could be the effects on our society in the long run? With the loss of jobs could mean poverty rates will rise. In my opinion, I feel this is possible, but only time will tell.

Some of the technology jobs that could be replaced includes:

Software developers

Web developers

Computer programmers

Coders

Data scientists

Music and digital art (animation, special effects) industries will also be heavily affected. There are already songs being created using AI softwares, recreating the voices of well-known artists. A ‘new’ Beatles song was recently posted to youtube using AI technology.

Will there be a decline in originality and creativity as AI evolves?

There are many different opinions surrounding whether AI is going to increase or decrease creativity. I think that this is entirely related to how you use the software. AI can acquire concepts and creative solutions, as well as expansion of the potential of human creativity. But on the other hand, AI creates using mass material, meaning it presents you with exactly what you want with little thought and little of your own creativity. This will not benefit your creativity or help you in any way. Meaning that relying on AI will most likely cause a decline in creativity and originality. However, AI technologies are still guided by humans, so understanding the software and putting it to good use is not always a negative thing. Linkedin.com has presented five different points of view surrounding the controversy of AI software: this gives you a more complex idea of the different perspectives.

Around September of 2022, Jason M Allen won first place in a competition in the United States, beating more than a dozen other entries in the ‘digital arts/digitally-manipulated photography’ category. His work was produced by an AI tool by the name of Midjourney. Using the Artist's written text of concepts and ideas to create the piece. The award was worth 300 dollars. Many people weren't happy with the outcome, expressing that Allen put little effort while other artists invested hours of their time. A post on Twitter by Anakin wrote ‘typing keywords in a good

enough sequence isn’t art. The fact that AI could take away jobs from real artists or people in the creative fields is so scary.’ I honestly do think this could affect artists negatively. AI-generated images are very simply produced, by just a few words. As a result, artists may begin to put less time and effort into their works seeing as winning has become simpler. I think the idea of AI-generated artworks are a form of art in the sense that people have to create the artwork through creative and conceptualised words, but in a competition, I believe they should have their own category.
